Golden Silk Orb Weavers (Nephila clavipes), also known as banana spiders or giant wood spiders, can be imposing looking, especially the females, which are considerably larger than the males. With bright yellow abdomens and a “death’s head” pattern on its back, the large spiders can usually be seen high in their sprawling webs, which have a golden hue and can span several meters.
Situated on a wooded peninsula, Tugaloo’s cottages and most campsites offer spectacular views of 55,590 acre Lake Hartwell in every direction. Some cottages even have private boat docks for overnight guests. Tent campers can choose between the developed campground or primitive sites located a short walk from the parking area. During summer, the lake is a popular destination for swimming, water skiing, sailing and boating. Both the Sassafras and Muscadine hiking trails wind through oak, walnut, mulberry and cherry trees.

The park has such amenities as two-and-a-half miles of beaches, bicycling, birding, boat tours, boating, canoeing, two fishing piers, hiking, kayaking, picnicking areas, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, wildlife viewing and full camping facilities. During the summer, camping reservations are recommended for best availability. It also has a visitor center, an interpretive exhibit and concessions.
