The park’s name is derived from a Cherokee language word meaning “tumbling waters”. The 729 foot waterfall is the highest in Georgia. It is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia.
The Kingfisher Cabin, writing retreat of well-known Macon novelist and short story author Harry Stillwell Edwards, was built in 1929. Edwards used the cabin to produce a weekly column for the "Atlanta Journal". The cabin graces the Sweetgum nature Trail at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon, Georgia.
